Dr. Padmini Shamasundara — full biography

Dr. Padmini Shamasundara is a psychiatrist at Healing TMS Clinic in Anaheim, California, specializing in the treatment of adult and adolescent depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders. She has practiced psychiatry for more than 27 years and brings particular focus to neuromodulation — including transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy — and to non-pharmacologic approaches that complement standard pharmacotherapy. She is accepting new patients for general psychiatric consultations, medication management, and TMS evaluations.

Medical education

  • Medical degree: completed 1985.
  • Residency in Psychiatry: July 1991 – June 1995.
  • State license: California.
  • DEA registration: active.
  • TMS device experience: Brain Ultimate M Series, Sabers Medical Blossom, and BrainsWay Deep TMS — the devices currently in use at our clinic. Course-by-course device selection is made by Dr. Shamasundara based on indication and protocol.

Areas of focus

Dr. Shamasundara's areas of focus include:

  • Treatment-resistant depression and major depressive disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (specialty focus)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (specialty focus)
  • Generalized anxiety, panic, and social anxiety disorders
  • Sleep disorders and insomnia in the context of psychiatric illness
  • TMS therapy for FDA-cleared indications — including adolescent depression, OCD, anxious depression, and migraine
  • Psychopharmacology with attention to minimizing reliance on long-term antidepressant or anxiolytic regimens

Approach to care

"My approach is grounded in compassionate, patient-centered care. I carefully evaluate and address each symptom on its own merits while considering the whole person and their unique circumstances. My goal is to identify the most effective treatment options available, incorporating holistic and evidence-based approaches whenever appropriate to support lasting mental health and overall well-being." — Dr. Padmini Shamasundara, M.D.

Dr. Shamasundara's clinical approach emphasizes diagnostic precision before treatment, measurement-based response tracking, and a stepped approach that considers neuromodulation, non-pharmacologic strategies, and mindfulness-based interventions alongside standard pharmacotherapy. Where a patient has responded inadequately to medication, she evaluates candidacy for TMS rather than escalating polypharmacy without indication.

A defining theme of her practice is reducing — where clinically appropriate — patient dependence on long-term antidepressant medication, by selecting evidence-based alternatives that address the underlying condition rather than only the symptom profile. This is done in coordination with the patient's prior treatment history, current presentation, and informed preference.
